Mark your calendars and set an iPhone alarm. The date for this year’s Tokyo Game Show is set, and it’ll likely be another round of West meets East as the Big Three jockey for position in the Land of the Rising Sun. This year’s TGS will be held from September 24-27 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, and will likely be the forum for some big announcements. The 2007 TGS was an eventful occasion, with the belated announcement of the DualShock 3 PS3 controller, now fortified with rumble function, and some big news from Square Enix about the Kingdom Hearts franchise, with the announcement of three new portable Kingdom Hearts games, on the PSP, DS and mobile phones. Last year’s TGS was a less eventful, but boasts the attendance record for the show, at close to 195 000 over the four-day event. What big news will be announced at TGS? Microsoft could reveal more details on Project Natal, or specific release date or titles for the upcoming hardware. From Nintendo, there will probably be new footage of Super Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii, Sony might show off the PSP Go and its upcoming titles. And Square Enix is sure to have some long-awaited news on the next Final Fantasy titles Final Fantasy XIII, PS3-exclusive Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy Gaiden: The Four Light Warriors. In light of recent news concerning the decline in video game sales, TGS should boost mainstream interest in the video game industry which has taken a hit over the past year.
