There was a game so new that it shocked a nation, a nation of people who would pound back quarters into a machine and play the game for hours. It was only in black and white in a world of color but no body cared. It was the game Asteroids brought to us from the fine game manufacturers, Atari (at the time, now Atari just sucks). All you were was a small triangle ship that fired a little white pellet that when it collided with one of the large asteroids that decided to fly passed your cockpit, would break it apart into two smaller pieces. Of course now the game beings to pick up, not only do you have two asteroids you have to shoot but their even smaller than the last one. When you think its all over when you shoot the two pieces well they just break apart causing two more to spawn from the fall on one.
The love of Asteroids never really left some, and so Universal Pictures had won the rights to make it into a motion picture. God knows how much money they had to pay for it but this is just the beginning. You see Universal also obtained the rights to other games, not necessarily videogames either but board games such as Battleship and Candyland. Since this game has absolutely no story, I can say with confidence that this will be the best video game film adaptation ever. I just wish Michael Bay didn’t decide to quit directing big action games this has his name written all over it in big black felt marker.
I wonder if any other movie companies decided to pick up the right to classic popular games out there? Maybe 20TH Century Fox will produce Risk or Mouse Trap. Or how about Miramax and Twister or Pitfall? I got it! Lionsgate could take on the most famous and controversial board game ever, Milton Bradly’s own Ouija!.
If no one has ever played Asteroids here’s a link, play it to your heart’s content, and don’t tell me this wouldn’t make a great movie. Universal is putting their main man producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura on the job (Transformers, GI JOE) so you know it’s gonna be one kick-ass movie. Until then, enjoy this trailer for a TV show that never made it. Hmm… maybe the movie might end up being like this?

This is kind of hilarious. At least since the video game didn’t really have a plot they don’t run the risk of annoying any fans with movie-video game inconsistencies.
