Diamond has published their big list of the top 300 comic titles for the month of August so I thought that it might be interesting to take a look at the top 25 and see what people are reading in comics these days. If you missed it on Diamond’s website here’s how this month’s top 25 shape up. Keep in mind the rankings are based on Diamond’s sales estimates not how much I like the books:
- Blackest Night #2 : I’m enjoying everything that’s gone down so far in Blackest Night, I don’t even agree with Cool Terry that it got off to a slow start. I think everything associated with Blackest Night has been solid reading material so far and I think it deserves to be in the number one spot.
- Captain America Reborn#2: I don’ t think that it’s really a secret that Reborn is going to be the catalyst to a turning point in Dark Reign, and so far Brubaker has established a solid foundation.
- Batman and Robin #3: Grant Morrison’s new Batman book has been better than expected so far. I’m a little surprised to see that fans are responding so well after all the negative press Battle for the Cowl got. Incidentally this is the last B&R with Frank Quitely doing the interior art. He’s still going to be doing the covers, but Phillip Tan takes over pencils for #4.(I think Tan’s a far superior artist anyways)
- Green Lantern #45: Standard stuff from one of the focal regular titles in a blockbuster from Marvel or DC, but still good and worth the read.
- Ultimate Comics Avengers #1: I’m still far to pissed off about Ultimatum to ever endorse anything from the Ultimate imprint. But at least it’s Mark Millar, it wasn’t bad, but that iteration of the Marvel U has scarred me.
- Dark Avengers#8: Check out the zany madcap adventures of Norman’s Heroes as they try and break out of a Nazi prison camp….er uh, wait I think that was Hogan’s Heroes.
- Uncanny X-Men#514: Matt Fraction is the best thing going in Marvel. I can’t wait to see how Utopia plays out.
- New Avengers #56:I’m a huge mark for Stuart Immonen’s art, the story itself left a bit to be desired considering all the big names in this title.
- Marvel’s Project #1: I actually thought this looked cooler when it was a preview than when I got to read the whole thing. I was pretty underwhelmed, but it’s Ed Brubaker so I’ll stick with it and see where it goes.
- Blackest Night Batman #1: I thought Superman was a much better title and I’m a little surprised to see Batman sell more copies, but I guess since Bruce Wayne is dead lots of people wanted to see how that would play out when …the dead shall rise.
- Ultimate Comics Spiderman #1: Same thing as #5, I wouldn’t say I hate it, I’m just so unimpressed with what Jeph Loeb did to the Ultimate imprint with Ultimatum, I can’t endorse anything going on there right now. Having said that, it wasn’t even close to the worst comic I read in August and while it wouldn’t make #11 on my list of most enjoyable reads it would probably be in the top 25.
- Green Lantern Corps #39: I critical piece in a story I’m digging quite a bit, worth your 3 bones.
- Batman #689:I’m a little disturbed by the fact that I’m not hating Judd Winnick’s Batman. I might even miss Judd when November rolls around.
- Flash Rebirth #4: Geoff Johns saved what was becoming a bowtie filled snoozefest with this issue. If the first three hadn’t been so flat I imagine #4 would have sold a ton more copies.
- Hulk #14: I’m mad at Jeph Leob for Ultimatum and I’m pretty down on the idea of paying 4 bucks for a book he co-wrote with his daughter. Sorry, but I quit Jeph Leob until he proves himself worthy to me again.
- Blackest Night Superman #1: I thought that this was the best of the three Blackest Night mini-series that came out this month. Earth 2 Superman is such a badass now that he’s dead.
- Amazing Spiderman #601: So
- Daredevil #500: An outstanding investment. The main story is great and will have you chomping at the bit for The List, the extra stories were great too. Daredevil 500 is 5 bucks you will read again and again. The Frank Miller story alone is worth the price of admission. Don’t sleep on DD500.
- Amazing Spiderman #602: much
- Hulk # 13: Same as my comments for #15, Jeph Leob you are on my List.
- Amazing Spiderman #603: Spidey…. Overkill senses tingling.
- Dark Wolverine #77: Daken just hasn’t got the personality required to carry a book, he’s like a cartoon character. Considering his background and the fact that he’s been around for 3 years I’m disappointed that Marvel hasn’t done more with him. Seeing him fuck with people is sort of entertaining though. Maybe a Scrooge McDuck team up would help.
- Blackest Night Titans #1: A solid debut for a title that was destined to be overshadowed by it’s Superman and Batman counterparts. It was still fun though. The Black Lantern Hawk is one bad mofo (the Black Lanterns are actually all pretty bad mofo’s) and Beastboy makes out with a zombie so I’m down for #2.
- Incredible Hulk #601: We’ve already gone over this….
- X-Men Legacy #227: Rogue bores me….

I read that as “Rogue bones me”; that changes the whole tone of the post.
Jeph Leob boned me a few times last month, but no such luck with Rouge.
Rogue can’t bone you. She can’t touch anyone! *sob* Or wait, did they change that again? Oh, X-Men. I can never keep up with your wacky shenanigans.
Also, I will disagree that Matt Fraction is the best thing going in Marvel right now, but that’s only because I’m a fan of Iron Man.
If you were a real fan of Iron Man you would recognize Fraction’s genius and contribution to the Iron Man mythos.
Adding in the movie plot but applying it to Pepper instead of Tony does not constitute contributing to the Iron Man mythos. ;)
