On MTV’s Splashpage Blog, they hypothesized about the possibility of Bryan Singer, the director of the first 2 X-Men movies, coming back to Marveland to direct the recently announced sequel to this summer’s X-Men spin off about everybody’s favorite feral mutant, Wolverine. The line of logic actually makes sense a little bit. It goes something like this, first off Christopher McQuarrie has officially been signed on to pen the script for WolverineII, McQuarrie who also wrote The Usual Suspects has a long history of collaboration with Singer and it seems logical that they would want to team up again for a movie like this one since it’s sure to be a success at the box office.
The conspiracy runs deeper though, consider this, the families of Superman creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Seigel have been scrapping with DC/Warner Brothers all summer over the rights to the character and if WB can’t get another Superman movie into production by 2011 they risk more legal action. Warner Brothers are considering Singer for the project and to the untrained eye that would be bad news if you were wanting him to direct WoverineII. But… Universal is fast tracking a Battlestar Galactica movie and Singer is their man behind the camera for that, which would mean that Superman might not fit into his schedule, but the Wolverine sequel would be timed perfectly.
Of course there are hundreds of other movies he could do after Battlestar too, so I wouldn’t start celebrating quite yet. First of all, I don’t have fond memories of Superman Returns. I didn’t hate it, but it was pretty forgettable, so it’s not a given that every comic movie Singer touches turns to gold. I also have to point out that Wolverine was pretty brutal too, I remain unconvinced that anybody could make a good follow up to that movie. It’s all speculation at this point, I just thought that was one of the better Hollywood conspiracy theories out there that you might like.
