capcom 300x300 Which Classic Capcom Franchise is Hitting E3?

For the last several weeks Capcom has teased us all with the news that they are going to announce a major new game at E3. So why the hype? Isn’t E3 where new games go to get unveiled? Well yes, but for this game Capcom has made no bones about the fact that they have an old franchise they are dusting off. Now I can only speak for myself but I immediately thought that Devil May Cry 5 made some sense. They have a game engine that they can use, the intellectual property is a winner, and with God of War III coming up it might make sense to get something out that could cash in on the inevitable increased popularity that will come about for that type of game. Of course I was dead wrong. Capcom shot that rumor down a few weeks back.

Now on Twitter Capcom has released a few more vague details about the game. First off it’s an action game (not the fighting game I was hoping for),and secondly it’s being done by Capcom Japan. So, I suppose there goes my theory that it was going to be a full 3d Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Needless to say the guys at Capcom are running me amok these days. I hate being wrong and they are just stuffing me at every turn.

So rather than make a prediction on what I think it will be for the third time, I think I’ll just throw out some awesome Capcom franchises that would make great new games. The first is my dark horse, but probably the one I’m pulling for the most, Strider. I’ve always thought that Strider was one of Capcom’s more imaginative creations and think that the relatively few games make it blank canvas for developers. It’s not very often you can create a world from almost scratch for a classic franchise.

The next name I want to run up the flag pole is Mega Man. Now I’m not making any predictions but if I were it would be Mega Man. As far as Capcom action games go, Mega Man is their bread and butter so it makes a great deal of sense that if it’s an action title, it would be this one. Now I’ve never been a huge Mega Man fan, but I would love to see him in a good next gen game. Although putting out good 3d Mega Man games hasn’t really been something they’ve excelled at this century (Or ever I guess).

Finally another game that would excite me to no end, that fits the adventure mold, and I think is a very real possibility is Onimusha. I’ve always thought that those games have told some of Capcom’s best stories and would love to a new tale of feudal Japan grace any one of my consoles. There’s also the matter of the Onimusha movie. With a rumored $70 million budget the film was put on indefinite hiatus after the death of Heath Ledger who was going to play the role of Roberto from the Dawn of Dreams game. Then suddenly Capcom revealed that the movie had finished shooting in March. Do you think that there’s a chance that they might be planning to have the game and movie coincide with one another? Only time will tell, but it’s just one more thing to look forward to as E3 creeps closer.
