Well here we go again with another fun filled review of comics from last week. It looks like once again Iwent another week without buying crap so hurray for me I guess. Well no more fucking around lets get right to it.
First up we have Batman and Robin # 1, the new monthly from Morrison and Quitely. First though I think a little recap is in order for all of you who haven’t been following whats been happening in the bat world. First off, now know that Batman isn’t really dead, he’s just stuck in the past but nobody in Gotham City knows it, secondly, with Battle for the Cowl behind us we now know who the new Batman and Robin are (that would be Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne , the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul). So what did I love about this comic ? Well the art was great, nothing wrong in that department and the story was solid that being said this couldn’t be a Cool Terry review if I didn’t nit pick shit to death so here I go. It starts off cool with a brand new flying (that’s right I said flying) Batmobile and then we see our first villain who reminds me way to much of Mr. Toads Wild Ride (or Wind in the Willows for some). I don’t know something about a Toad racing a car around, it seems a little bit corny to me even for a comic book but still cool, if only a little bit weird. The new dynamic between Batman and Robin is interesting mostly because Damian is such a little asshole (not quite sure how I feel about this mind you I wasn’t raised by the league of assassins). This leads us to the new Batcave under Wayne Tower (I don’t see how this is any better then having it under a house but whatever works right?) So how does this book end well we meet the big bad the main villain and his name is Pyg (it’s a guy in a pig mask) Who preforms is own surgery on people to turn them into his creepy looking perfect dolls. Now while I admit he is creepy I’m not convinced (yet) that this was the villain to start your book off I mean come on Gotham is without the Dark Knight for months and this is the villain they go with . I mean with Batman gone you think that one of the big guys would have stepped in and took over the city by now but hey it’s only issue 1 and barring my nit picking it’s a good comic so lets hope it’s all up from here. (And I do know that Morrison was going for a 60’s style Batman TV tied in to a David Lynch and Twin Peaks, creepy European cartoons and marionette feel. His words not mine)
Up next we have issue # 17 of Northlanders The viking art of single combat this is a stand alone issue which means you don’t need to know anything about this series at all to read it, but you should because it’s fucking awesome. Now I know some of you out there are saying what the fuck do I care about a comic book about vikings? Well the reason is because vikings are freaking awesome and you can pick up the 2 story arcs in trade now (vol 1 , vol 2) so it’s easy to find. If you like blood and killing and fighting with a little pillaging thrown in for good luck, then you will like this comic. It’s gotten nothing but good press and even Warren Ellis gives it a nod (not a big one but still come on it’s Warren Ellis) and any time he talks you should listen, hell if the guy who wrote Planetary even looks at you….. well you get my point he’s awesome and if he thinks it good so should you. Anyways this comic shows you the single combat between 2 Viking warriors who represent their leaders on the field of combat and you get an insight in to their weapons and tactics, (it really is a fun read) highly recommended.
I’ll follow that up with Solomon Grundy # 4 of 7 These comics are leading up to the Blackest Night story in the DCU and so far each issue has had Solomon fight a major battle with some villain or hero of the DCU. The point to all this seems to be for Solomon to find the knife that killed him and forgive the person who killed him and this somehow plays a point (big or small still unsure) in Blackest Night. In the first 3 issues the Green Lantern (Allan Scott) tries to keep him out of trouble. In this issue Solomon goes after Allan, when his wife gets in the way he attacks her and Scott rushes home to save her. But I won’t tell you what happens you have to buy it, This has been fun to read and I really want to know how this fits in to Blackest Night. DC has taken a b list character here and made it interesting so if you haven’t yet picked these up you will be surprised how much you will enjoy them.
Lastly I have for you readers what I believe to be a great concept that I can’t believe took so long for us to see. What am I talking about it’s Werewolves on the Moon versus Vampires # 1 of 3 . That is a sweet freaking idea, to take the most hated of enemies and put them on the moon to do battle is nothing short but epic. While the art is a little cartoony we are treated to some blood and a really cool death. This is just a fun comic with some great lines and hopefully more in the next 2 issues. I want to talk about the story itself but I find I can’t without spoiling this book for you so all I will say is that if you any amount of love for these 2 monsters (or the moon) pick up this comic I mean common just look at that fucking cover and tell me that’s not cool.
