So after a 40% discount my comics this week still ended up costing me 120 dollars, and I now remember why I had stopped buying comics. They are going to bleed me dry. Maybe there is some kind of self-help program or support group that will help me stop, or at least lessen, my compulsion to buy comics. Anyways, enough of my bitching, that’s not why you come here (at least I hope that’s not the reason cuz that would be sad. You came here to hear about comics, so let’s get started, shall we?
Number 1 on the list today is Dead Run # 1. Now I know this came out back in June, but I only picked it up the other week. Sue me. for those of you who like the post-apocalyptic world thing (who doesn’t?) this one’s for you. This part Mad Max part Transporter and part Punisher (only because of the skull t-shirt and the shit-load of weapons this guy brings with him). So here’s the the deal: the world is a waste land (think Mad Max but with more cities) and we have our main character Nick (who makes deliveries like in the Transporter) with his suped-up car and bag-o-tricks aka guns. Now it turns out Nick failed to make a delivery and now he is forced to make a suicide delivery to San Francisco (which is called the Dead Run because no one makes it there alive). Cue the gun scene, where he loads up and boom we are off to the races. This comic has a great feel and looks good and as I said before if you like wasteland type worlds, you’ll like this book (reminds me of the role playing game Rifts way back when).
Next up we have Deadpool Merc with a Mouth #1. As with most Deadpool comics this one finds our favorite badass getting a new job, and this times it’s recovering a package from the Savage land before Hydra can get to the package. Now, while this all sounds familiar, we can already see that somehow things will turn out bad for our hero (it always does). The twist this time is that the package he is retrieving turns out to be a severed head. And this is not just any severed head we are talking about; this is the Marvel Zombies Deadpool head. Now, for fans of either Deadpool or Marvel Zombies this book is for you. I mean, think of how much fun you could have with your very own talking, severed zombie head. Then think what Deadpool could do with it. Also in this issue you get a bonus comic, Deadpool vs. The Hulk (1997). Just a little extra for the fans out there. So to recap: Deadpool + Zombie head = Awesome. ‘Nuff said.

Next we have first issue of a five-isssue miniseries of the new comic by Mike Mignola called Sir Edward Grey Witchfinder. For those of you who read Hellboy, Sir Edward is a character you have seen before on a number of occasions. This is the first time we have seen a comic book featuring him as the main character and not a unknown side character. This comic details his earlier adventures as a Victorian occult detective. As a fan of Hellboy, I loved this book. The art, still in that Hellboy-style we have all come to know and love, and a solid story (which should be no surprise). The story leads us on the chase of a demon who seems to be draining his victims of blood and can disappear at will. This is a solid title that I assume will somehow tie into the Hellboy series, I hope this does well for Mignola and we will all be able to see more of Sir Edward Grey. And in my opinion that’s a good thing.

The last comic of the day I’ll be talking about is Justice League Cry for Justice #1. I was sold on this when I first read the preview. This is going to be a big mini-series that leads back into regular JLA comic (that straight from the writers mouth). I’m very impressed with how James Robinson started this comic with a speech from The Green Lantern. GL asks Superman and the whole League when there will be justice and he reminds the League, as well as the reader (because sometimes we forget), that unlike the other heroes in the League (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc.) he is the Law in space sector 2814, and that just being good and true isn’t enough to scare the villains back into the shadows anymore. The rest of the comic shows other heroes around the world who seem to have had enough of handling villains with kid gloves as well, and have cried out for justice. My two favorite characters in the DCU are Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) and both leave the League together to seek justice. This is looking to be my favorite title this month and I can not wait for the rest. Anytime someone stands up to Superman and his self-righteous attitude is ‘win’ as far as I’m concerned. It’s not that I hate Superman, it’s just that I find his self-righteous, self-appointed savior-of-all-mankind attitude sometimes wears thin. So if your a fan of the Green Lantern or Green arrow or just a fan of Justice go grab this one; you won’t be sorry.
So with that I leave you once again to your own devices and hope that when all is said and done, you have found something worth reading from the comic rack. Until next time.
