The Second Best Thing Cool Terry Pulled Last Week.
Welcome friends to another edition of what I pulled last week (man, that sounds so creepy when I say it like that). Anyways, this week I have 4 comics to review, three of them first issues. So sit back and enjoy the ride that is Cool Terry’s comic review.
First on the hit list we have Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash #1. This comic picks up right where last years six-part mini-series left off. After defeating Freddy and Jason, Ash has settled into retirement with Caroline, and is living the dream (no more freaky demons to fight). This lasts about 6 months before life turns to shit for Ash again. It seems that nobody can leave that damned Book of the Dead alone, so it look likes both Freddy and Jason are back and pissed off. Now I liked this book but compared to last years first issue, it was not quite as strong. However, there are5 more issues to go, so I’m not going to worry to much. The writers here pretty much nail the Freddy and Ash characters, but in my opinion fall a little short on Jason. But hey, two out of three ain’t bad. If you are a fan of any of these characters you should buy this book (and last year’s series, if you can find them). You won’t be sorry. A comic combining Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm Street), Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th) and Ashley J. “Ash” Williams (Evil Dead) in a battle royale is going to be awesome. We’re talking about the kings of horror here, you can’t go wrong. So when you’re out buying comics this week: Shop smart. Shop “S” mart.
Next I’m jumping over to part of the Batman: Reborn arc with Gotham city Sirens #1. As you
probably guessed, this comic features Three of Gotham’s female criminal elite; Catwoman (fresh off of having her heart ripped out in Hush), Harley Quinn (currently separated from the Joker, mostly because he hasn’t called her) and Poison Ivy (still wrapping men around her little finger). The art here is standard, nothing to write home about. The story is handled by Paul Dini (if the names sounds familiar, it’s because he worked on both Batman: The Animated series, Batman Beyond, abd was a writer on DC Countdown series and also wrote the script for the New Batman game Arkham Asylum). It’s an alright story so far, but leaves you with a nice cliffhanger. My favorite part (and I’m hoping he’s in it more). is the part were the Riddler calmly walks to the wall and takes down his walking stick, then gets a demented look in his eyes before attacking the punk that wrecked his place. It’s only one page, but I’m hoping for more Riddler in fallowing issues. I love the Riddler and find him to be a under utilized and often overlooked villain. But if you’re a fan of the Bad Girls of Gotham city, this title was made for you. Get it, even if it’s only for the cover.
We follow-up the girls of Gotham with Predator #1. What got me was the cover. It’s amazing. It’s so fucking cool-looking that everything else seems pale by comparison. The art inside isn’t bad; it’s just not as cool as the cover. Storywise well after seeing the cover I expected to see more kills, not just the aftermath. While you do see the Predators a bit, you don’t actually see them kill anyone in the first issue, which is kinda disappointing. While seeing a man’s carved up face is cool, it would have been better to see the predator actually doing it, not just the aftermath (just my opinion). The story focuses heavily on a Major Briggs and a Mercenary named Thorpe who (surprise surprise) don’t get along well. The first issue ends with Thorpe taking charge after finding the men they were leading killed and charging straight at the Predators. To me he seemed unsurprised at the appearance of Predators, but that just might be my theory. No doubt fans of Predator will already have put together a similar theory. I found the first issue a little lacking there is so much potential here, I will be buying the second issues at least. Hope that helps you.

Last we have Chris Claremont’s X-Men Forever #2. In this issue we find Wolverines bones smoking in the grass and the X-Mansion under attack by Sabretooth and we are gifted with a great battle between them. For fans of Sabretooth, you will love this as he kicks the X-Men’s collective asses all by himself (at least for a little while). As far as I’m concerned, this is shaping up to be a good series and I for one am glad that Claremont is back to tell his X-Men story. Getting this comic twice a month is a big bonus; it means less wait, more awesome. Now while I’m not super-pleased that it looks like they killed Wolverine. And sometimes (and I mean most times) it seems that Wolverine overshadows the other X-Men, so this will give the other X-Men time to shine. It looks like we will also be getting more of Super-spy Nick Fury (who kicks ass, in my book, by the way), which is a good thing anyway you slice it. So if your looking for a different X-Men story, this is it. Hurry up and get on board. This is one title you don’t want to miss.
Well that about wraps up my article today. Hope you enjoyed it, and if not, feel free to let me know (although I do prefer praise) and I will try to do better (or tell you to take a hike). So go down to your local comic shop grab a stack and get reading. If you find something out there you wish to share with the comic reading world, let me know. Until next time.
