Cool Terry On June - 28 - 2009

Once again I have dropped the ball and let the week go by without my review of comics, so to those of you who were looking for it sorry, but hey better late than never right? So since i missed a week I’m going to combine the last couple of weeks into one and this time around you get 6 reviews instead of the normal 4 I do.

BuckRogers1 300x225 The Second Best Thing Cool Terry Pulled the Last Couple of WeeksFirst up is Dynamite’s Buck Rogers # 1. This first issue shows you how our soon to be hero ends up in the future in a space craft of his own design. When reading this comic I kept thinking that the character reminds me of  Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) except that Buck was first. I also see some similarity’s to the first episode of Farscape but that isn’t a bad thing it just means that this comic might seem familiar (at least to some of you). With an interesting story and strong art this is shaping up to be a pretty solid title (at least after 1 issue) and it doesn’t hurt that John Cassady  and  Alex  Ross are doing the covers.

Also from Dynamite we have Herogasm #2 which is a part of the ongoing series The Boys. The second issue of Herogasm finds the heroes of the world still drinking and fucking while the vice president joins them. We find out that the reason The Boys are there is to kidnap the vice president (who is going to be made the next puppet president) meanwhile a  group of super heroes is being sent after The Boys with the intent to kill them. If you are a fan of The Boys this is a good little side story, if The Boys isn’t up your alley then this most definitely isn’t for you. Personally I love this shit and I’m hoping that Dynamite can keep up the great work they are doing. More and more of my favorite titles are coming from Dynamite and that’s a good thing.

x men origins gambit @p 197x300 The Second Best Thing Cool Terry Pulled the Last Couple of WeeksFollowing that we have Marvel’s one shot X-men Origins Gambit , this tells the tale of Gambit before he joined the X-men and for those of you who don’t know who Gambit is it’s a nice introduction to the character. For others, most of the story will be familiar since throughout out all the x-men and Gambit comics we have heard his story a couple of times before. Still it’s and good read on our favorite Cajun Thief, but like i have said if you are an avid reader of the Marvel Universe this is not really a new story, it may flesh out a few areas but it might not be worth your 3.99 unless you are a die hard Gambit fan. But hey it’s only 4 bucks so why not.

Next we have Red Robin # 1, this book is part of the Batman: Reborn series and I know some of you might be thinking why the hell would I want to read a comic about Tim Drake in his half Batman half Robin looking costume, and like you I had me doubts. That is until I read the first couple of pages… then I was hooked. Chris Yost has taken a side kick and launched him to the forefront in only one issue; I mean I can’t wait to read the next issue. Tim Drake has become tougher and meaner since the loss of Batman and refuse’s to believe that he is dead so he’s searching the world for his lost friend and mentor. This comic blew me away far more then Grant Morrison’s Batman Reborn. This is a must have title for any Batman fan and it looks like we will be hearing a lot more from Chris Yost if he can keep writing like this.

incognito 4 cvr 197x300 The Second Best Thing Cool Terry Pulled the Last Couple of WeeksAh next on my pull list is  Ed Brubaker’s Incognito # 4 I fucking love these books the art the story the overall feeling of the book are all great, this is a must have title for everyone no question. In issue 4, Zack (hero or criminal your choice) has been picked up by a superhero for breaking his parole and is put back on the power reducing drugs again so he can be used as bait against his former boss (who now knows that he is still alive and kicking). With the arrival of Ava Destruction (one of the crime bosses top agents) Zack finds him self powerless and at her mercy, also we see a different side of the story, one where we normally see that the hero’s are good and just and right. We see what was told to our friend Zack was the opposite that they kill, cut open your head do weird shit in your head, and torture you, these are people you don’t want catching you. Now whether you want to believe the so called heroes or criminals well that is your choice me I’m just looking forward to the ride.

Lastly we Have the Big one from last week Captain America # 600 this comic gives you 5 stories (2 being reprints) all about Captain America. Now first off, I do not feel that this comic lived up to all the hype that was surrounding it, that’s not to say it was a bad comic it wasn’t it was good, just not as great as the hype. But for all of you out there in comic land who have not been following the marvel world as of late or newbies coming in this is a great comic to help you along with a taste of what’s going on. Also it’s a great lead up to the July 1st release of the much anticipated Captain America Reborn # 1. So if you haven’t picked this up please do so as long as you are aware that this does not answer the questions about Cap’s death so much as adds to them.
