In a Twitter last week, the co-creator of Deadpool, Rob Liefield let the internet know that he had been in talks with the producers of X-Men Origins:Wolverine about the very real possibility of a Deadpool spinoff. Of course it would all be predicated on box office success for the Wolverine flick. Other reports on the internet are suggesting that the early leak of an unfinished version of Wolverine’s solo debut on the silver screen are actually going to help improve that flick’s performance of at the box office. Which would bode well for the possibility of a Deadpool movie.
I’ve always felt that Deadpool was one of the hidden gems in the Marvel closet. Now I know that those of us who are regular comic readers, know all about Wade Wilson and what he brings to the Marvel mythos. But for the most part, outside of those geek circles Deadpool is a relative unknown. Clearly the studio execs. recognized the potential of the character when they cast Ryan Reynolds in the role; and were looking towards the future of the whole Marvel franchise. Reynold’s personality will suit the ‘merc with the mouth’ perfectly, and I think that the Wade Wilson/Ryan Reynolds combo will result in Deadpool becoming one of, if not the, most important character in the movie version of the Marvel Universe.
Liefield is pretty clear that the screen adaptation of Deadpool is different than the comic version of the character. I just hope it’s, Deadpool’s face isn’t f’d up different so the studio can showcase Reynold’s looks different, not lets give Wade Wilson a different personality different. But at this point it’s all speculation. Lets cross our fingers and hope that Wolverine does well in theaters because if there’s one thing that comic fans everywhere will agree on, it’s that 10 bucks is a small price to pay to see Wade Wilson on the big screen.
