dusk 1 203x300 Cool Terry Reviews Dusk vol.1

OK here we go, since my arch nemesis Chickenbone Robinson has already given you his views I thought it was time for me to present you with my review of David Doub’s  vampire story Dusk . Now let me start by saying that I certainly don’t love this comic but I also don’t hate it. I guess you could say I liked it and think that it has the potential to be really good. I’m not sure exactly what it was that I found lacking but some thing was missing, for me at least (but I’m kinda a fucked up dude) so don’t let this turn you off this comic right away.

Volume one consists of 4 chapters each one it’s own story about the character Eve (a willing servant to a vampire) and her Vampire Lord Ash. First off I liked the art in chapter one the most. The next 2 chapters I found the art took a step backwards which might have something to do with my feelings towards this comic but then in chapter 4 the art work picks up again. If I had to hazard a guess I’d say chapter 2 was Maki Naro’s earlier work in his pursuit of a certain style. I could be talking out of my ass here I really think that the anime style of the first chapter is the way to go with this comic. Not to be a dick or anything but I hated the art in the 3rd chapter compared to the others it looked kinda childish while 2 looked like a weaker version of one and 4 has a slightly more real look (by the way I loved the close up shots of Eve’s face in 4 good job Franc Czuba)

Chapter one throws you right into the story, no background just the middle of the story and that part worked fine for me, we find that Eve and Lord Ash seem to hunt down other vampires who over step their bounds (is there some secret council that makes laws? I don’t know but I’m interested). We learn that Ash wants Eve to give up following him and live a normal life, while Eve (clearly in love with Ash) wants nothing more then to be by his side.

Chapter 2 once again has Ash trying to convince Eve to give up her life of vampire lord servitude, he even goes so far as to have her tricked into believing her husband, who she left years ago was looking for her and was in need of her help. While there appears to be a moment where Eve almost falters with the lifestyle she’s chosen in the end all this seems to do is reinforce her decision to stay (once again only my opinion from what I have read)

The third chapter gives us the story of Eve hunting down of a vampire who has disobeyed some law and is to be taken in for punishment. This might have been where I staring to have mixed feelings. The art was sub-par and Eve seemed way more aggressive and reckless than in the previous chapters, or the following episode. I don’t know if this was what turned me off or not, but something here just didn’t sit right with me about this story, it might have been the lack of information concerning where Lord Ash comes by his power to judge others whether it is an appointment or his own call but something feels missing here (it was cool in chapter one but a bigger bone thrown the readers way about whats going on behind the scenes would have been nice).

The last chapter has Eve by herself tracking down the caster of spell that will kill all of the students in a school. The caster (a student himself) is picked on by other students so his reason for killing them all is clear, here we once again see Eve try to save the boy from making a horrible mistake. I think this was my favorite story and showed much improvement from the earlier chapters (story wise).

All in all after reading this a second time through I would give Dusk a 3 out of 5. The second time through it started to grow on me more. If David Doub’s work continues to improve like the last story did he could be on to something really good here. So for the 10 dollars it costs add this to you collection be sure to do it. It’s things like this, the underground independent comics that usually turn out the best and when it does, you get to be one of those guys or girls who get to say you were reading that before it was cool (well at least that’s my opinion).

If you want to pick up a copy of Dusk it’s available here [Editor's Note: Eatsleepgeek.com is not an Amazon affiliate and we in no way profit from the sale of Dusk, we just think it's important to give coverage to writers and artists who choose to go the self publication route]
