Guile returns, and this time he’s bringing his blonde flat-top to anyone with access to an internet browser. The classic fighting game Street Fighter II: Championship Edition is now available to play for free at kongregate.com. SFII:CE was the successor to the original Street Fighter II and revolutionized Western and Eastern Civilization (no word yet on Northern or Southern Civilization) by giving players a chance to play as the feared boss characters Balrog, Sagat, Vega and M. Bison. SFII: CE has made its mark on many consoles, even the current generation with the release of the game on the Xbox Live marketplace a couple years ago. It’s very likely you’ve already spent many hours playing this game in some form or another, but this time its free and available in your browser. Even with the technical limits of your average internet-friendly computer, the game still manages to run fairly smoothly, deftly handling sprites circa 1991 with ease. Controlling the game is an adaptable challenge on the keyboard; it might take a while to perfect that hadoken (geek translation: fireball) you’ve practiced over the years. You won’t be able to recapture the competitive spirit, social atmosphere, or even the aroma of a early 90s arcade, but the sound of Guile’s theme music should be enough to satisfy even the hardcore fans of the game. Head on over to kongregate.com, lace up those gloves and get ready to take on the World Warriors.
