That’s right, like the Power Glove, our little Game Boy has all grown up but still isn’t old enough to go drinking at bars. I remember back in 1989 when I was young, and the Game Boy had just been released; the only person I knew who had one was a cousin of mine, and I use to play it for hours. The green and black screen, permanently burned a sensation of fun into my brain. Sure it went blurry when ever you moved but I couldn’t get enough of kicking Rino’s ass in Spiderman. My neck used to hurt as I lay crouched on a step or balled up on a chair. I loved it, and soon the day would come when I would get one, or so I thought. One Christmas morn it turned out to be my brother and not me, as sad as I was, I did not have to fear, for he didn’t care about it as much as I did, so I had no problems using it when ever I wanted.
It is sad to know that Nintendo laid to rest the Game Boy name back in 2006 to replace it with the now extremely popular Nintendo DS and the newly vamped Nintendo DSi. Although Nintendo DS(i) is one of the most popular hand held systems ever, it will never become as popular as Game Boy has ever become. In the late 80’s till the early 90’s, Nintendo decided that it would be cool to have a cartoon about a kid named Kevin who accidentally landed himself in the Nintendo world with his beloved dog ( who I think was gay, he wore a scarf) Duke. He would encounter many different characters from the known universe such as Megaman (who sounded like he smoked ten packs of cigarettes a day), Simon Belmont (who had this weird self obsessed persona), Kid Icarus (who said everything with “cus” at the end of it), Princess Lana ( some dame they made up) and later on Game Boy (a square shaped box that sounds like a mongoloid who sucked to much helium). Not only was Game Boy in a cartoon but was also a shape in Nintendo fruit snacks.
Being as basic as it was, and games that really didn’t take much thought to play, the world couldn’t get enough of game boy and went on to have over 100 games in it’s library. But no matter how many different versions there were there was nothing that could out do the large gray, 4xAA battery devouring, mono-color screen that captured a new kind of gamer, and this is to you Happy Birthday Game Boy.
