Heroes: Chapter 5: Tabula Rasa
Peter/Hiro/Emma:
After fainting in Peter’s living room last week, everybody’s favorite paramedic brings his buddy Hiro to the hospital. When Hiro wakes up he thanks Peter and tells him that now when he’s jumping through time that he is brought where he needs to go, but ever since he learned how to use his powers, they’ve been slowly killing him. Since Hiro jumped to Peter out of the blue, he knows that it is his destiny to help Peter. Peter isn’t as sold on the theory and suggests that maybe Hiro isn’t there to help him but instead he’s jumped to the person who could help him.
While coming up with an idea Peter takes Hiro’s powers only to bump into Emma on the way out who’s there to ask if it was him who delivered the cello to her apartment. Peter has no idea what she is talking about and denies all knowledge of sending her such an instrument. Emma tries to talk to him more about the powers other people have, but Peter is in a rush and tells her that the best person she can talk to about super powers would be the man who’s room he’s currently leaving, that of Hiro Nakamura.
Emma seeks Hiro for help on the subject of super powers. Since Emma is deaf all she can do is read the lips of people who don’t know how to “sign”, but for some odd reason is having trouble trying to read the lips of Hiro. He realizes that she has trouble because his first language is not english and tries to pronunciate the words better for her to understand. She asks him how she can get rid of her power. He tells her she should never want to get rid of it but instead to embrace them. While talking to Emma, Hiro begins to see that he isn’t here for Peter at all but rather to help this girl who is standing in-front of him. After revealing what her power is, Hiro shares that he is the master of time and space.
While roaming around the halls of the hospital Hiro comes across a posting for a talent show for children and this give him an idea. He takes the posting and places it on Emma’s desk where she can see it. Upon returning to her desk Emma finds the posting of a talent show and knows its from Hiro. She heads over to the room where the talent show is being held at and finds Hiro standing in-front of a group of kids preforming magic. Hiro sees Emma walk in and tells everyone to applaud because his assistant is here. Hiro has Emma come up front and stand behind a divider that Hiro is putting up. While he gets the divider up to where no one is going to see Emma, he stops time but allows Emma to still “exist” and brings her out out from behind the curtain so she can see for herself how beautiful and non-harmful her powers are. While Hiro was putting up the divider the kids were still clapping and because of this even the colors that Emma sees when sound is present are trapped in time. Emma as always is spell bound but this time the colors are not moving allowing her to see and even touch them. Feeling he has done his work, Hiro informs Emma to hide behind the set of curtains behind the children, and when he calls for her to emerge to show that she has “teleported” to the other side of the room. After the show ends the nurses catch up to Hiro and force him back into his room where they tell him he must stay if he wishes to heal. Emma goes back to the piano and begins to play, as if the lights to her are a drug she feels compelled to witness them once again, but this time she feels good about them. While playing Hiro sneaks back out and follows the piano sounds being played. Emma informs him that he should go back but he tells her that there is someone he must save before he dies. Hiro disappears and is no longer seen.
A short time Later Peter shows up with the powers that are necessary to save Hiro’s life but Emma tells him he has gone.
Samuel/Sylar:
While Sylar is taking in his new surroundings Samuel goes off and talks to Lydia about the stories he’s heard of “The Great” Sylar. Samuel can’t fathom what has happened to Sylar since then but l feels he’s currently battling internally between his old self who he seems to have forgotten, and with his new timid self. Samuel leaves Lydia and goes up to talk to the new family recruit. Every time he calls him by name Samuel uses the name Sylar. Sylar is confused on what is going on; in the police station they said his name was Gabriel but here Samuel calls him Sylar. Samuel asks him on which name he should be called, Sylar thinks about it for a moment and a name pops into his head which seems appropriate that of Nathan.Samuel is confused by what is wrong with Sylar but takes him on a tour of the carnival. While talking and walking Samuel reveales that this place is a safe haven for people with powers, because here, EVERYONE has some kind of power. While Samuel can see that as they talk some of the past memories that Sylar had are slowly emerging but they don’t seem to be emerging as fast as Samuel would like it so he lets Sylar walk around with Lydia a while. Samuel goes up to Edgar and tells him to give some tickets to the officer that arrested Sylar with hopes that seeing him might jog back some memories. Edgar cautions him that if Sylar sees his arresting officer he might kill him; Samuel has no objections to that, in fact that is his plan, to bring out the Sylar they all know of.
Upon discovering that Lydia and Sylar are currently together walking and talking, Edgar shows his jealous side and decides to face Sylar and to show him how much he doesn’t care for him being around. Sylar can feel that he isn’t liked by Edgar but only wishes to work like everyone else there so he can contribute. Edgar throws some knives at him but Sylar telekinetically throws them back showing that he won’t scare easily and is not scared by Edgar. Before the fight between the two begins to escalate, Samuel steps in and offers Sylar a chance to be able to get all his memories back quickly and easily. Sylar agrees and soon they talk to another member of the family named Damian who takes Sylar to the house of mirrors. While in the house Damion places his hands upon the head of Sylar, similar to a vulcan mind meld, and then releases him, leaving Sylar all alone to face his past. While in the house of mirrors Sylar begins to start reliving his past, the mother he killed, the powers he stole. All of this becomes to much for him and he feels disgusted of his past. He finds his way out of the house of mirrors and proceeds to vomit just right outside.
Many hours later as the sun begins to come down and the carnival starts up, Samuel approaches Sylar, who confesses that he remembers everything but he doesn’t like how he was. Just the thought of him killing all those people really turn his stomach to the point of wanting to vomit again. With an agenda in mind Samuel tries to reason with Sylar, trying to cohort him into trying to be like the “old” Sylar from the stories. Sylar wants nothing to do with his past, but for Samuel all is not lost, for he knows that the officer has taken the bait and is now at the carnival, Samuel lets Sylar know that he is present and that if the officer ever finds out that Sylar is staying here, the whole family will get in trouble, and tells him that something must be done. Sylar knows that Samuel wants him to kill the officer, but doesn’t want to come right out and say it. Feeling that Samuel us right, Sylar follows the officer to the house of mirrors in the same room where he regained his memories to confront him. While inside the officer see’s Sylar and pulls out his gun and fires. Sylar stops the bullets and in defense throws lighting at him causing the officer to fall. Seeing what is happening and watching himself turn into the “old” Sylar he doesn’t want to be he lets the officer go. Hidden around a corner watching his every move Edgar lies in wait and once he sees Sylar isn’t doing what Samuel wanted he decides to act. While Sylar walks away, Edgar jumps out and with his knives and speed he cuts up the officer.
The next day Samuel baptizes Sylar as a member of their new family and the circle is now complete. In secrete Edgar talks to Samuel and lets him know that Sylar isn’t going to be as Samuel was hoping for, he didn’t even kill the officer. Samuel isn’t concerned as he once was, with proper guidance he can mold Sylar into anything he wants.
Claire/Noah/Peter:
Claire pops over to her father’s apartment so she can do laundry. While looking for quarters they both hear a noise coming from the bathroom. The both go off to investigate the noise and out of the bathroom pops Peter looking for Noah’s help. Peter tells Noah that Hiro has came to him out of the blue but is currently dying in a hospital not far from there. Claire asks if there’s anything she can do, like preform a blood transfusion. Noah slams that idea down by saying it’ll do more harm than good, instead of healing Hiro, it would do the opposite by speeding up the process. Noah does know of someone who can help, there was a kid he had taken in some years ago who could bring back the dying. Having nothing but the old address to rely upon, Noah and Peter head out to see if they can retrieve his power.
Peter grabs a hold of Noah and he teleports them both to the address that Noah had on record. They come to a house who’s outside plants look all dead. The closer the get to the house the stronger they can smell a stench leaking out of the house, The both know the smell, it is the smell of death. Cautiously both of them enter the premise where they find the parents of the child, dead, rotting away in their chairs. Noah tells Peter that he’s heard of a people who are able to not only give life but also take life away. While looking around the house they get shot at by someone upstairs. The kid has take a shotgun and will shoot anyone who comes to close to him. Noah tells Peter to go around back to see if he can get up there while Noah tries to reason with the kid. Noah puts down the gun he has been holding since they made they’re way into the home, re-affirming the kid that everything will be all right. The boy doesn’t believe it but really doesn’t have the heart to actually kill anyone. It takes awhile but Noah finally gets to the top where he begins to inch closer to the boy but the closer he gets the more terrifies the boy gets. Noah begins to talk about how much he knows about his powers, that they can be used for healing. Peter finally gets up to the top floor as well and he can see how unstable the boy has become and tries to step in-front of the barrel so he can stop time before the kid accidentally kills Noah. The plan works but Peter could stop time quick enough and pays the price as the shotgun goes off feeding pellets into his stomach. Peter falls to the floor, life slowly leaving him. Noah tells the boy that he’s the only one who can save him. The kid is to worried that if he touches Peter he wouldn’t heal him, but instead kill him as he did accidentally with his parents. Noah tells him to think about what he’s doing, think about healing and then place his hands upon him. Believing Noah the kid does what he is told and like everything he’s helped in the past Peter feels the effects and the wounds begin to heal.
Standing outside Noah tells Peter that he had to pull some strings but there’s a plane waiting for him to take him back to New York. Peter asks why Noah isn’t going to join him, Noah simply replies that he’s gotta stay here and look after the boy to make sure he’s already and taken care of, make sure that he also isn’t held responsible for his parents death. With the boys power surging though his body Peter sets off so he can get back to Hiro before it’s too late.
Predictions:
Matt Parkman will eventually find Sylar and give him back his old self which will cause an even bigger internal battle in which “old” Sylar is going to win. When this does happen, he will turn on Samuel and eventually kill him. After that his hunger will force him to attack the others that live at the carnival but they will band together to stop him, possibly trapping him.

I’m getting awfully close to tapping out on Heroes. It’s just not getting the job done for me this season. I’ll never actually be able to follow through on my threat to quit watching, but that’s not going to stop me from threatening anyways.

I haven’t seen an episode since last year’s premiere. But after reading some of Dan X.’s recaps, I might just jump in from the beginning of this season. Might be a fruitless endeavor, depending on the lifespan of the series.
