Heroes: Volume 5: Redemption: Chapter 11, The Fifth Stage
Samuel/Claire:
Lydia approaches Samuel and tells him (for some odd reason) that she knows the truth about his involvement in the death of his brother Joseph but is willing not to say anything for the fear some something happening to her daughter. Just as she finishes with Samuel a member of the family by the name of Eli, comes up and asks what is the urgent matter in which he was summoned. Samuel asks since Edgar has seen to have left the family he needs a new right hand man and is wondering if he was up to the task. Eli accepts without reason to abject and soon is given an assignment; Break into Noah’s apartment and steal a box marked Primatech on it.
Claire and Gretchen have been traveling for almost an entire day following the directions to the compass, to both the girls surprise they end up at a carnival. As the get out of the car to investigate it, Claire soon gets second thoughts about going in there. Have driven for such a long to get here Gretchen encourages her to at least check it out before she walks away. Just then Samuel walks out to greet the two girls as they stand out in the parking lot. He tells her to at least come in and check it out before turning back. The walk in without any trouble and soon Samuel begins to talk about how they are accepting to everyone even normal people without powers. Samuel lets them watch someone use there powers while entertaining the public. They witness a contest in which a man must throw a ball to knock over bottles to win a prize. While the customer (a big large man) throws the ball the man behind the counter uses his powers to sightly adjust the curvature and flight so the man will miss the bottles. Three times the customer throws three times he misses and walks away. The second player is a little girl who pays the man behind the counter and receives a ball in which she throws and with the help of the carny knocks over all the bottles in wins herself a prize. Seeing how Claire is looking at everything Samuel leads the girls to a popcorn stand and tells them that this is the best popcorn in the world. He gives each girl a bag and asks the girls what they think. Claire tells him that she’s unsure about all this. Knowing what he needs to do woe win Claire over and eventually join his family, he tells them to wander around the carnival and explore, they are free to leave when ever they like but he asks them not to until the bag of popcorn is finished. The two agree and Samuel sends Claire and Gretchen on their way. While walking around eating the popcorn they come across an attraction where a woman can tell your future by showing it on her back. Claire again is still wondering if this whole thing is a good idea, but Gretchen being the complete opposite of Claire urges her on and so they walk into a tent, there siting on a chair with her back turned to them is Lydia. Claire asks “how does this work?” and Lydia responds that all she has to do is ask a question then take her hand and the answer will appear on her back. So Claire asks a question out loud “Am I suppose to be here?”. Then magically and image appears on the back of Lydia, but its of Claire in her cheerleader outfit with the words “Indestructible Girl” underneath. Claire begins to fear out and asks if this is her future telling her that she’s suppose to be here. Lydia responds by stating what she’s looking at isn’t the future instead it’s actually the present. Both Claire and Gretchen are really freaked out and decide to leave. Like a sponge Claire begins to soak up everything she has seen and her feelings for this place begin to change. Gretchen can feel within her that there’s something not right to this place and tells Claire that it’s time to go since they are done their popcorn. Claire looks into her bag and sees she only has a few left and that’s when Samuel walks up to them as if on cue and re-asks the question to Claire about what she feels about the place now. Claire has certainly changed her mind and upon hearing this Samuel invites her and Gretchen to the back to see how everything goes on.
The farther the two girls fall down the rabbit hole while investigating into the carnival the more extreme the girls begin to feel towards what they do here. While the walk around seeing what happens behind the scenes the two girls see a story time event Samuel is holding with the younger children. Claire watches as everyone seems extremely happy and nice, Gretchen can’t help but feel that this is all a facade. While the two girls begin to talk Claire gets visited by a man from her past, that of Eric Doyle, the puppet master. They exchange a few words and Claire asks what happened to him since she last saw him. He tells her that he was on the run and the government was after him. Soon he was approached by Samuel and was told about this place and decided to check it out, he’s been here ever since. Doyle is running out of time to talk so he asks Claire if she is going to be around for a bit longer she tells him she is. Doyle is happy and tells her that there’s something he really needs to talk about with her when she gets back. Gretchen asks how Claire is friends with a carny, Claire smiles and quickly explains how he once kidnapped her mother and her and tried to force her mother to shoot her, but Claire since then has forgiven him. Samuel is done his story and urges Claire to tell one more before the children go off to bed, Claire refuses saying that she doesn’t know any but Samuel shrugs it off telling her that everyone knows a story. While Claire is telling the story to the young-lings, Gretchen approaches Samuel and asks him what is it that he wants from her because its not nice toying with her emotions. Samuel being a deceiver, answers Gretchen but Gretchen questions him telling her that what he said isn’t an answer. He tells her that there’s not much they can offer Claire but love, because they are a large family they have lots of love to give. Claire is soon done with her story about a frog and the children are rushed off to bed when the man from the ball/bottle game gets back stage and wishes to talk to the person in-charge. Samuel tells the man he isn’t suppose to be back here but the man doesn’t listen instead he tells Samuel that he was cheated and wants his money back. Samuel tells him that the games are all about chance and skill and that the reason he feels cheated is that he didn’t have the skill necessary to win. The man becomes enraged and starts to attack Samuel. Samuel lets the man attack him telling everyone that the man just needs to let out his frustrations. Claire has seen enough and steps in to help Samuel. The man tells Claire that he’s not afraid to attack anyone who gets in his way and in the process the man breaks a glass bottle and slices it towards Claire. Claire takes the bottle to her face but soon heals from the wound like Wolverine from Xmen and tells the man that he can’t hurt her, that he can’t any of them. The man freaks out and starts running away.
While Claire washes off the wounds of Samuel, she inquires why didn’t he do anything. Samuel tells her he could have torn him apart but didn’t because that’s not how things are done around here. They can use them when they are entertaining but outside of that they must not use them. Claire feels this is stupid, and Samuel agrees but there’s nothing they can do unless a person is willing to change just that. Samuel tells Claire that is she wants she can spend a few days here, maybe they can work on making this place even better then it is right now.
On their way out of the carnival Claire tells Cretchen that she wouldn’t be going back with her right now, instead she will be staying here for a few days but will be back before school starts. Gretchen isn’t happy to hear this but she can see that Claire is happier then she has ever seen her. Reluctant to walk away from Claire, Gretchen has no choice and tells Claire that she will see her in a few days and takes off, leaving the carnival as it disappears behind her.
Peter/Nathan/Sylar:
While at the hospital where he works, Peter is visited by Angela who knows that Peter is still stuck on the idea of trying to get Nathan back. She tells him to forget about it, Nathan is gone, it’s time for acceptance. Peter feels that his brother is still there, that’s why Sylar wasn’t able to kill them at dinner. Feeling that Peter hasn’t thought this through, she asks how he’s going to go after a man with a wide verity of powers, Peters response is by taking them away. Just then Renee walks in and Peter thanks him for coming while he grabs his arm and begins to absorb his power.
On his way out of the hospital to hunt down Sylar to get his brother back, Peter sees a woman get into the elevator with him and selects a floor. Peter notices that this woman is looking at him and out of kindness he says “hi”. She responds by saying “hi” as well but soon follows up with her hand wrapped around the neck of Peter as she picks him up. Soon the doors open and she throws him into a wall of an unfinished floor. Out of the elevator no longer walks out the woman but instead Sylar. Sylar starts to walk around the floor taunting Peter on how is he supose to stop him. What Sylar doesn’t know is that Peter is following him with a board and soon knocks him in the back of the head. This causes Sylar to fall. Sylar responds by trying to fire something out of his hands but realizes that nothing is coming out and that he’s bleeding. Peter goes after Sylar and begins to punch and kick him on the ground. Relying only on his physical abilities Sylar strikes back and trying to kill Peter. Peter get Sylar ot the point of exhaustion as the begins to pound on him while Sylar is laying on a stack of wood. Sylar asks Peter what he wants and Peter quickly replies with “Nathan”. Sylar laughs at him feeling that there’s nothing that Peter can do to him that will force him to turn back into Nathan and asks another question “What are you gonna beat Nathan out of me?”. This gives Peter an idea and he grabs a nail gun (that happens to be close by) and begins to nail Sylar to the boards of wood. Peter gives him an option, both that aren’t in Sylars favor. The first option is allowing Sylar to make his own choice, where Peter will allow Sylar to heal but he has to give up his body and soul in becoming Nathan or two, with his new ability he not only can take away powers but can also erase memories, he will go into his mind and force Nathan to surface. Sylar doesn’t give Peter much of an option, so Peter goes into his brain and starts to erase memories untill he is able to find Nathan. Peter lets Nathan up allowing him to heal from his injuries. Just before he wipes his hand clean from where the nail went through, an image is quickly seen, the same exact image that Hiro was hunting down in the first season with Linderman.
Peter takes Nathan to the top of the roof where the both realized they could fly. Nathan is done, he feels it within himself and isn’t willing to put up fighting anymore. Peter reminded Nathan that at the time so many years ago they had ruff patches that they were able to get through as long as they stick together. Nathan knows that eventually Sylar will break through, so he tells Peter to let him go. Nathan jumps off the roof only to have Peter catch him. Nathan tell Peter to let him go, Peter holds as long as he could but Nathan slips through his hand and Peter watches his brother fall to his doom, accepting that he maybe gone but he’ll never be forgotten. As Nathan hits the car bellow creating a significant crater in the roof, Sylar can be seen getting up and waving at Peter as he walks away.
Noah:
Noah is looking at his wall for the connection between Samuel and the compass when he receives a knock at the door. Noah knows who it is and answers the door to let Lauren in. Noah lets Lauren know that he feels weird going on a date so many years after of being off the market. While they exchange words Lauren notices that Noah has a wall dedicated to Samuel and the compass. Not noticing it before during the dinner she goes off and reads a note that Noah stuck to the hall trying to figure out how the compass works. Acting like a little kid who has to show off his new shiny toy, Noah tries to look for the compass to show Lauren but no luck the compass isn’t here. He soon picks up the phone and calls Claire to warn her about the action she just took in getting herself mixed up in all of this. Lauren decides to help Noah locate Claire by trying to triangulate Claire’s cell phone so they can locate where she might be headed off too. The trick works but its not very precise and Noah breaks down and starts to tell Lauren that his need to control has driven everyone he loved away from him, even Lauren. He goes on to talk about a time they shared something, that they were getting real personal almost to the point of him cheating on his wife. Lauren tells him that she doesn’t remember any of it. Noah tells her to save both of them from a mistake she went to the Haitian and he erased her memory. Lauren feels cheated and that the only reason their together now is that Noah is trying to light a spark they once had. Just then Noah receives and unexpected knock at his door. When he answers it he meets a man by the name of Eli who reviles that he’s his emissary. Then Eli asks if he can come in, but of course Noah tells him no. The doesn’t stop Eli, for as soon as Noah turns around Eli is already inside, while the one behind the door lets himself in. Soon there are three of them and he tells Noah that all he came for is the box and that he doesn’t want anyone hurt. Noah only fears for himself and Lauren and indicated that there’s a gun underneath the table. Lauren tips the table over and takes the gun shooting one of the multiple Eli’s. They both run to the bathroom where Noah grabs another gun so they can defend themselves. They make a plan on how they will take down the replicator, and soon exit the bath room to realise that both the replicator and the box full of information from Primatech are gone.
