Columbia Pictures confirmed Friday that Jay Chou the singing, acting, fighting sensation from Taiwan would be joining the cast of The Green Hornet as Kato. Already cast in the movie are Seth Rogen, Nicholas Cage, and Cameron Diaz, but hardcore fans wanted to know who would be filling the role Bruce Lee made famous in the 1966 tv series. Michael Gondry, the film’s director had this to say about Chou’s addition to the cast:
Jay is incredibly unique and charming and fights like a wild dog! When I filmed him next to Seth, they had such great chemistry, and I knew the movie will be great.
While Chou himself offered up the following comment when asked about reprising a role made famous by a pop culture icon like Bruce Lee:
It’s an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee. I won’t try to be Bruce Lee’s Kato – I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part. Of course, it’s a dream role, and I’m looking forward to the challenge.
The rumor mill has worked overtime with regards to who would be cast in this role, Korean born actor Sang-woo Kwone was the latest name in circulation, Stephen Chow had been discussed as a likely candidate, and at one point the name Jet Li was making the rounds. I haven’t seen enough of Jay Chou to know if he can fill Bruce Lee’s shoes. However, I have seen enough you tube to know that there are way more video clips of him singing than fighting. I still managed to find this fight scene from Kung Fu Drunk though if you want to check out Jay’s nunchuck skills.
