So in the Internet world when ever anybody of any note makes any kind of statement people tend to freak out or focus on the negative aspect of the statement. So when Jon Favreau (director of Iron Man) makes the comment that the Avengers Movie is going to be a “failed experiment” people go nuts. So in an attempt to alleviate your fears I will bring you the whole conversation between Ireland on-line and the man himself.
When talking about the Avengers movie we get this “I think that’s fun. I think it’s inevitable, and ‘The Avengers’ might be the thing that helps rescue us from the inevitable sequel slump that you get into, because you’re throwing everything on its ear.”
and this “It might be a failed experiment or it might be something wonderful, but it allows you to add complexity in an organic way where you’re culminating with something bigger, as opposed to trying to play out and not repeat the same story over and over again.”
Which to me seems pretty non-committal it’s just saying the movie may or may not suck it’s called hedging your bets people. Personally I think a Avengers movie is a great idea and I hope it’s good but only time will tell that’s all this is saying. As well in the exchange Jon makes a comment about both Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke (who are a part of Iron Man 2)
“Scarlett brings a new element that not only works us towards ‘The Avengers’ but also changed the dynamic between Robert and Gwyneth.
“With Mickey Rourke, I didn’t want to just have two guys in robot suits hitting each other again. I wanted to have a different type of villain.”
So before all of you Fan boys start to freak out take a step back and take a deep breath and realize that Jon’s just trying to cover his own ass in case the movie flops and you come at him screaming for blood, this way he has something to point at and say no wait see here I told you it would suck it’s not my fault (or maybe I’m reading to much into this). Anyways I’m looking forward to both Iron Man 2 and the Avengers movie and if I can sit through the train wreck that’s was the Wolverine movie I can sit through anything.Till next time true believers.

I think you’ve missed the point by just a hair. It sounds to me like the Avengers movie is a chance to take some risks, that there will be an opportunity to change up the way these properties are currently handled (which means sequal-in them until they reboot or die) and cross develop characters into multiple stories and multiple films, rather than just, Wolverine, Wolverine II, The Wrath of Wolverine, Wolverine meets The Batman, Wolverine and the Three Stooges, ad nauseum… Like all dramatic upsets, it has the potential to go horribly horribly awry, but if you don’t take the risk you don’t get the blockbuster.
I think you and Jon Favreau are saying the same thing, Terry was just pointing out that somehow the internet spun his comments to suggest that he thinks it will be a failure, which just isn’t the case.
