xmen first class Josh Schwartz Excited to Do X Men: First Class
In case you missed it Josh Schwartz, the creator of Chuck and Gossip Girl is writing the script for the upcoming X-Men movie X-Men:First Class.  Now, admittedly I know nothing about Josh Schwartz; other than I’ve seen just enough Chuck to know that I don’t like it.  I’ve never seen Gossip Girl, I don’t want to see it, I don’t know what it’s about, I don’t want to know what it’s about, I don’t even want to be friends with anybody who watches it.  So I fully recognize that I am completely unqualified to ask this question; but here it goes anyways.  At some level was anybody other than me sickened to hear that the creator of Gossip Girl is writing a fucking X-Men movie?  If he were rebooting Strawberry Shortcake, Bratz, or doing the heavily rumored action flick/ reality show The Hills (Outside Fallujah) I would consider him a great choice, but we are talking about the classic X-Men here.  I’m getting a bad feeling about this and I haven’t even heard anything yet.

Schwartz, in an interview with THR (an interview that has apparently given me self-esteem issues because no self respecting straight man could get through it…and I did…Hmmmm I hope it’s self esteem issues) Schwartz had nothing whatsoever to say about the project, but it sounded like this.

It’s something I’d always fantasized about doing. I knew (producer) Simon Kinberg and he approached me about it. I’ve started it and I’m having a blast, but I’m not allowed to say anything more

The reason I bring this whole mess up is simply because the one thing that is known about X-Men:First Class is that the final scene from Wolverine set it up. You know the scene I mean; mysterious bald dude who looks like Captain Picard shows up, takes everybody away, that scene.  I have to be honest, nothing could have me more disappointed than that news. Just start over guys.  They made two great X-Men movies, one below expectations X-Men movie, and an abhorrent Wolverine flick.  So give it up and start over.  The franchise is headed in the wrong direction why build on it. When I saw the retro First Class posters for the comic I thought it was some of the coolest comic art I’d seen in a while. Then I thought, hey!! why not do an X-Men movie in that vein?  It’s classic, it’s interesting, stylistically it could be the most stunning superhero flick ever, and most importantly it lets you start over. It can still be an action movie, in fact I think that if you did a superhero movie set in the 50’s the action would be better, or at least more fresh, but there’s no point in doing it like that if it’s not Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Beast, and Angel running around in yellow and navy costumes. That can’t happen in the continuity of the current movies, so just reboot it.  For the most part I’d say the X-Men movie franchise has been a huge hit but lets explore some of the great things that have happened in the comic that can’t happen in that take on the Marvel universe.

  1. David Jung says:

FWIW, Jean Grey’s original code name was Marvel Girl. Ms. Marvel is Carol Danvers.

  2. touche, thanks for that.
