Well, the long awaited Kill Zone 2 came out a week ago and I happened to sit down and play this little game. Many have been waiting all so patiently since the launch of ye olde Playstation 3. I didn’t bother to do a review until I had properly played it and well I’m glad I waited. I now have a much better grasp on what you (the reader) is going to expect from the game, thats if you haven’t already slapped a Benjamin or two on the counter to pick up a copy of this game for your self.
Watching the intro movie was awesome, I would have liked a lil’ recap of what happened, incase some who never played the first game decided to play this game, for example me. Since there is no recap of the storyline, the reason you’ve gone to some strange planet to kill what look like Nazi-era German soldiers, is beyond me.
To the real nitty gritty; the game.
The game controls are a little wonky. I had to adjust the sensitivity right off the hop. Either I was too fast or too slow. There wasn’t a happy medium that I could find. When you start turning, it starts off a little slow, but then all of a sudden you see is a bunch of crazy lines as you break the sound barrier while looking around. It’s as if the Flash just ran past you. This forces you to have to re-adjust yourself again, just to miss your target once again. It wouldn’t be so bad if there was some kind of auto-aim of sorts. Maybe in a future patch.
The final thing that I find frustrating is the loading. The loading at the start of the game is not slow(I really enjoy playing with the 3D loading screen). Its the loading during your playing of the mission. It loads a little too much. You walk into a room, the screen stops for half a second, just to load it, and when you exit out of it, BAM, more quick loading. I think it would make more sense to have it take longer to load up initially before playing the game so you don’t have loading in the middle of a level.
On a positive note, the game looks awesome. It feels a little cramped at times, but I find it brings you more into the game, leaving you unsure of what lurks behind a pillar or corner.
The game play in intense, there are certain times where you go all nuts on a wave after wave of futuristic Nazi looking bastards. And when your done that you feel pretty damn good, looking for another fight.
The enemy AI is no joke. The computer will try to hide the characters behind some kind of wall, pillar or shield, the same way you can hide your character. If you know someone is behind a pillar you can shoot all you want, but he’s not coming out until you stop, and only then might he come out for a second. Other times he might just stick his arm out and try to shoot you blind that way.
Now the online play isn’t much better then the one player mode. But there is so much more you can do for clans. Online on the Killzone 2 website, you can start up a clan and have members controlled from there, or even set up wars with other clans.
One of the bonuses for playing online is that you get to unlock abilities. Every kill or team win helps you collect points that upgrade your status and unlock weapons or on the other hand ablities, such as allow ing you to heal a teammate in a time of need.
I rank this game (if you need a ranking) of 7.0 out of 10. Worth a buy, but if your no good at shooting games, get your ass away from this game. It’ll eat you alive.
*UPDATE*
After playing the game even more, I now find myself spending hours a day playing both the one player game and online game. I got really use to the controls so it has no longer much of a problem. The rating doesn’t change but I do find since I’m highly addicted that it was well worth the money.
