Spock Reflections 3It’s hard to slow a geek girl down. In fact, with the busy, geeky life I lead, it’s incredibly hard to slow me down because, as Scotty from Star Trek said, you can’t change the laws of physics — and Newton’s First Law of Motion definitely applies to my life (objects in motion tend to stay in motion). However, I discovered my kryptonite this past week, and my life has come to a grinding halt. What sort of strange and mysterious force could stop a geek girl in her tracks during Rosh HaShanah and the ten days of awe? Answer: bronchitis.

So, before I cough out any more lungs (I apparently have at least seven lungs, considering how many of them I’ve coughed out so far), I thought it would be a fantastic idea to peruse my pull list for the week and see what comic books could help keep me going.

1. Blackest Night: Superman #2 - The first issue of this short, three-part story had me on the edge of my seat. Blackest Night: Superman is, by far, the best of the tie-in stories. Lois is back from the grave as a Black Lantern, and no one in Smallville is safe as Psycho Pirate attacks. Kudos to James Robinson for writing such an engaging story so far!

2. Doctor Who: Black Death, White Life – I don’t have a good feeling about this, Doctor! The TARDIS has (not intentionally, I should hope!) landed in London during the Great Plague. I hope Martha brought plenty of hand sanitizer, because if she didn’t, this could spell disaster for her!

3. Star Trek: Spock – Reflections #3 – So far, I love this story. And, really, while there is one main story with Spock on a voyage back to Earth, this mini-series tells us many short stories in the form of flash-backs as Spock reflects on his past. This issue’s previously untold story features Kirk, Bones, and the crew of the original Enterprise!

4. Spider-Woman #1 – I have a love-hate relationship with Brian Michael Bendis. Have you ever noticed how assassins always have three names? Lee Harvey Oswald, John Wilkes Booth, Mark David Chapman, etc. Any coincidence that Brian Michael Bendis has three names and has been slowly assassinating the Marvel Universe with such classics as Secret Invasion and Dark Reign? Well, I loved House of M and Ultimate Spider-Man (before Ultimatum), so I’m giving him another chance. I do love Jessica Drew, so I’m hoping this will be a good one!

5. Wolverine First Class #19 - I love Peter David. He can be a pretty crazy, wacky writer (especially when it comes to his Star Trek novels), but he also tells a fantastic story. So, I’m excited, as always, to see this issue of Wolverine First Class. This time around, Logan and Kitty find themselves shanghaied by those wacky skrulls and facing off against none other than the Super-Skrull himself! What’s the Skrull word for “SNIKT”?

So, once again, it’s a great week for comics. Whether you’re into the Big Two or you like the smaller comic companies, there’s bound to be something for everyone this week; and if there isn’t, that’s the joy of comics: there’s always next week!
