It’s been a busy and productive week. I can’t go into too many details right now, but your Friendly Neighborhood Marron is working on a project for a huge nationwide charity organization that involves drawing a comic. For those of you who don’t know, this geeky lover of all things comic and Star Trek-related is also a graphic designer and artist (during something that, away from the internet, we call “real life” — whatever that means!) But do you think the daunting task of drawing a comic of my own would turn me away from comics? Heck no! I have comics on the brain, and I’m excited about what’s coming out this week. Let’s take a look!
1. Batman Widening Gyre #2 - The Bat-filled adventure written by Kevin Smith (yes, that Kevin Smith) continues with the second issue of this six part mini-series. I have to admit that I had some fairly mixed feelings about the first issue, although I liked it overall. I’m not ready to give up on this series yet, and this issue apparently promises some guest stars and plot twists! I think Scooby Doo would be a great guest star (after all, Batman and Robin guest starred on Scooby Doo back in the 70s), but I’m pretty sure we won’t be seeing any talking dogs in this action-packed adventure!
2. Die Hard Year One #1 - Yippee Ki Yay! If I had to name my favorite badass action hero, I think I’d have to say John McClane. I’m very excited about reading this comic by Howard Chaykin. A prequel to the very first Die Hard movie, this takes place over a decade beforehand, when McClane is just a rookie cop trying to earn his badge. This comic looks very promising, and I’m very excited about seeing how well John McClane’s awesomeness translates into sequential art.
3. Green Lantern #46 – More fun with Blackest Night! Sinestro would like to have a word or three with Mongul after he took control of the Sinestro Corps from Sinestro, but there might not be time for that when the fallen Sinestro corps members begin to rise. Once again, I have to admit that I’m really into Blackest Night a lot more than I thought I would be, and I’m definitely looking forward to reading this next issue and seeing the story continue!
4. Life Undead – A nice, big 48-page comic written by LOST writer Paul Zbyszewski seems promising. Why, you ask? Because it’s about zombies! Well, not just any ol’ mindless zombies. New Orleans voodoo zombies! Or zombie, I should say. David Mears, narcotics cop, is on a mission to hunt down the Hatian drug lord who filled him with the voodoo spirits of vengeance, sentencing him to a life without a soul — a Life Undead.
5. Vincent Price Presents: Special Tingler #1 – One of the many secrets of my geekery is that I’m a huge fan of Vincent Price. So, then, how could I pass up this Vincent Price thriller written by Mark Miller? A direct sequel to the classic movie The Tingler. With a team like Miller and artist Alex Lopez, this is sure to be a terrifying tale of suspense and horror!
Once again, it looks to be a fantastic week for comics! Whether you’re a fan of one of the big comic companies or something more off the beaten path, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Can’t find something that’s your cup of tea? Well, that’s the beauty of comics: there’s always next week!
