I tried, I’m not kidding, I really did. When Marvel’s Joe Q gave us the inside scoop about Marvel Divas on myspace, I said to myself, “Dude, chill, you’re over reacting. You don’t have the full story, there’s something you’re missing, or you don’t know what you’re talking about.” It’s not very often that I get this worked up over something and it turns out my reaction was justified. However, now that I’ve had time, to digest and think about it a little bit, I’ve decided that my reaction wasn’t strong enough. As a wise man once said to me “This is bunk.” (OK, I lied it wasn’t a wise man, it was some dork I used to work with who’s head was shaped like a peanut, who we all referred to as No Tail Dale)
Marvel Divas, follows the lives of Hell Cat, Black Cat, Firestar, and Photon, as they struggle through the hardships of living the double life of a superhero, and being in relationships. If you’re not bought in yet try this on for size, think of it as “Sex in the City in the Marvel Universe”….that’s right from Joe Q himself. In the master list of things I don’t want my eyes to gaze upon, Marvel Divas ranks higher than dog fighting, but lower than watching dogs hump. I wouldn’t want to read a book about those four doing anything, never mind going for lattes, dinner at expensive restaurants, and talking about their sex lives. This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Take 4 characters nobody cares about, you know, so the book sucks four times as much, and make a comic about them doing four times as much stuff nobody ever gave a shit about in the first place. By my math we are already at 16 times worse than a bad comic. Now square that, because the writer’s claim to fame is Big Love and the artist is a guy who’s big break in comics was well…Marvel Divas and we are at 256. Finally, just to be petty I’m going to say that we must also add 4 to it because you can’t have Diva’s of any kind without including Aretha Franklin (who weighs 4 times more than any other woman who has ever been called a diva) and we have it. Scientific proof that Marvel Divas is going to be 300 times worse than a comic should ever be allowed to be.
Before I go, I would like to acknowledge in advance that I know more about Sex in the City than someone who is this bothered by this series should be. I just wanted to get that out of the way because I know if I didn’t somebody else would have on the comments.

Oh lord, that sounds just awful. Your reaction was completely justified. This title should be entertaining in how much of a train wreck it will probably turn out to be.
Can I please do a guest review of it for your site Rokk? Please??!!
who cares they’re hot bods, I bet you anything it’ll only be half as bad as u think.
I’d take that bet. I think I’m being somewhat optimistic.
what do ya wanna bet?
Pastrami sandwich
I think you may be missing something about this new graphic novel: the female demographic. I doubt that this venture is only aimed at men so maybe it’s time to get your heads out of your arses. It may not be something you’re interested in but if it brings in a whole new customer base for Marvel it benefits everyone interested in graphic novels.
It’s not a “venture” it’s a comic book. It’s not about opening doors to new markets or customers bases, if that were the case don’t you think that they would have put a real writer and a real artist on the project. It’s just a shitty idea, plain and simple. I didn’t miss “the female demographic”, I’m well aware of the fact that women shop and spend money. But if you were a comic reader you’d know that this isn’t going to spark any interest from people who don’t read comics already. All it’s going to do is piss off people who read comics already. You can convince yourself all you want that its a strategic move on Marvel’s part all you want, but you’d still be stupid. The people who might enjoy this wouldn’t go into a comic store to pick this up. And it’s not a “graphic novel”. Don’t talk about what should be in comic stores when you’ve clearly never been in one before.
deal….I want mine with mustard and a tripple decker with a milkshake on the side
“The female demographic”?!?
That kind of mentality and marketing is exactly why when I log in to a social networking site, that I’m assaulted with diet pill promotions, ads for engagement rings, dating services, and shoes.
Newsflash!!
Not all women require daily soap opera topics/themes for them to be interested, fans, or engaged with the product!
In fact, I’m offended that they would assume that anyone (male or female) would be interested in this when tackled from this perspective. I can see it being an interesting side project if taken from the perspectives of a variety of characters and how they deal with double lives (assuming they have them) and how they balance. But to assume that focusing on the daily habits of four young women will highlight sex talk, dating drama, fashion and shoes insults the intelligence of female comic book fans generations over.
And for the record, I hated Sex and the City too.
Thanks Dawn, I was so focused on how insulting this was to me as a comic fan, it never occurred to me that it’s infinitely more insulting to a female comic fan.
Ksses thanx
