marvel What Movie Will Marvel Announce for 2012

Solely based on a dozen sentences from each guy, Todd Black and Kevin Fiege have single handedly managed to upstage all the video game announcements that were made this past week at E3. That’s right Marvel’s answer to the dynamic duo through a series of interviews have managed to create a bigger stir than Mario, Sonic, The Beatles, and Solid Snake combined. How they were able to eclipse the biggest and brightest stars of the video game world was simple.   You see they have the answers to the secrets of the Marvel movie universe that we all want.

They’re not the secret identities of some B or C list superheroes either, Fiege, is Marvel’s president of production, while Black is the producer of Spiderman 4, and the two of them spent the weekend dropping hints about what we can expect to see from Marvel on the big screen between now and 2012. Black served up a double shot of disappointment when he announced that Morbius would not be the villain in Spiderman 4 and that Kirsten Dunst would be back for the fourth film in the Spiderman series. Meanwhile Feige couldn’t stop talking about all the things that are coming up, although everything sort of centered around 2012’s The Avengers flick in one way or another. There are news reports everywhere about all the details, and I’m sure you’ve checked them out by now.  If you’ve missed them check out firstshowing.net the original source of the madness. There was one thing he said though that has me salivating and I wanted to speculate about it here. According to Fiege there will be an announcement made shortly regarding a new Marvel flick for 2012.

So what could it be? Well after racking my brain to try and figure it out, I’ve come up with my thoughts on the things I think are the most likely. Here’s what I’ve come up with, as well as my odds of said dream project actually being the announcement Feige is referring to.

  • New X-Men Movie:There have been tons of confirmations that there are going to be lots more X-Men movies over the last few months. Magneto, Wolverine II, Deadpool, X-Men 4, X-Men: First Class, I have no doubt that we’ll be seeing another X movie before 2012. The question is really if Marvel would tease this as a major announcement to be made in the next couple of months. I think these movies will all get a thumbs up at some point, I just think it’s a little to anti-climactic to be what Fiege is talking about ODDS 4:1
  • Avengers Related Movie: We all know there’s a script being written for Ant-Man so that’s not it. Since the announcement that Kate Mara had been added to the Iron Man II cast I’ve convinced myself that she will be playing Scarlet Witch, so I suppose they could be doing either a Scarlett Witch/Vision or a Wasp movie, but I doubt it. There’s been a ton invested in The Avengers already and to start doing B-List characters before we know more about how the movies are going to be received doesn’t make much sense.  Black Panther would also make a great deal of sense to hit the theaters.  ODDS: 50:1
  • Daredevil Reboot:As much as I would love to pretend the Ben Affleck/Matt Murdoch (or Bentt Affloch, as I like to call the character) fiasco never happened I’m pretty sure that the Daredevil we’ve seen is the Daredevil we’re stuck with.  Matt Murdoch is an A-List hero to comic fans, but to the general public he’s unknown, so if the allure of a super-stud like Ben Affleck can’t make for a decent day at the box office, I’d bet Daredevil won’t be seeing the light of day any time soon.  If Marvel is going to reboot something it won’t be Daredevil ODDS: 100:1
  • Fantastic Four Reboot: I don’t know how to put it any simpler than this: Marvel shit the bed with the Fantastic Four. They didn’t put their best foot forward with one of their can’t miss comics.  The Fantastic Four could have been so much more, and I think the folks at Marvel probably know that the chances of reboot success with The Fantastic Four will be much greater than it would be with Daredevil.   The chances of a good reboot go beyond the commercial appeal of the characters, but also in terms of the success of  actors involved in both flicks.  Other than Jessica Alba, the FF movies  had nobody in them, so at least there’s an unknown element with regards to what star power will be able to produce at the box office with The FF .  Say what you will about Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, but there’s no doubt they have more drawing power than Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis.  There are also strong ties between the Fantastic Four and The Avengers which make it a little more logical.  ODDS 8:1
  • Venom Movie: We already know that the Venom  movie has a writing team so don’t be surprised if Venom is the big announcement.  Venom is a pretty good bet to kill in the ticket sales department.   Eddie Brock is a comic fan favorite, and to the general public he’s a cool black alien version of Spiderman so I could see execs thinking he’s a great choice.  Personally I think a Venom movie without Spiderman is going to be a joke, but if they can use it to introduce  Carnage and set up  Spiderman 5 I’ll be pretty stoked for it.  It’s also a great opportunity to boot Topher Grace and get a real Eddie Brock in the role. Despite all that though, Spiderman 3 was a disapointment so I don’t know if this makes sense. ODDS: 10:1

So those are my thoughts on what the folks at Marvel might have up their sleeves.  Now, it’s entirely possible that it could be something totally different like Dr. Strange, Blade, or the oft discussed She-Hulk flick.  Wouldn’t a Marvel Zombies movie be the bee’s knees?  Who knows, it’s really alll we can do is sit and wait, but it sure is fun the theorize about what it could be.  If you have any thoughts on what you’d like to see, or think I’ve overlooked an obvious possibility please let us know.
