A clever bit of marketing this week at E3 for the upcoming EA game Dante’s Inferno, featuring a mock Christian group called S.A.V.E.D.- Salvationists Against Virtual and Eternal Damnation- complete with poorly crafted website and a hand-out flier. The site features this quote:
Those who fall victim to the trappings of this VIRTUAL HELL game will not have to wait long until the find themselves in REAL ACTUAL HELL where they will not be given any weapons or power ups to protect themselves from fiery demons, razorblade babies, or spewing bodily fluids.
I’d like to think if I were to find myself eternally damned to Hell, I could rely on a Contra spread shot or a fire flower (probably redundant) to work my way through the nine circles of Hell. I guess that means no white-water rafting on the River Styx either.
At the SAVED website, there is a link to the official site for EA’s Dante’s Inferno, along with an auto-loading video and some truly amazing animated gifs. The official site features a teaser trailer and a partial-gameplay trailer. Dante’s Inferno has a compelling vision of Hell. It’s the type of hell you could ask to Homecoming. The look of the game successfully communicates or (ex-communicates) a feeling of terror and isolation. At the same time it is a visually stunning game, with a creative interpretation of Hell that looks like it’s straight from a Guillermo Del Toro film. The gameplay looks to match the intensity of the well-established God of War games. Plus, the main character wields a kick-ass scythe, forged from the bone and sinew of a demon. This game looks like it could be one of the surprise successes of this years E3.
