Mario will return to the Wii this year according to a the Nikkei Shimbun, Japan’s top economic paper. The new Mario game will be released in the last half of 2009, in an attempt to recover from the current decrease in the sale of Wii consoles.  There are no details on the release, but it’s a safe bet that Nintendo will include the new Mario game in it’s keynote address. On a less important note, the report also confirms a new Wii Fit game to be released this fall.

This new Mario game will probably not be the next in the series of platform games. The rumors surrounding the announcement are too sparse to suggest a new Super Mario Galaxy or similar title.  If Nintendo is merciful, it won’t be a new Mario Party game. That doesn’t leave many other options. If it’s just a confirmation of the Mario and Sonic Olympic game, it will not be the title that sparks sales of the Nintendo Wii. Although a new Dr. Mario Title would be a welcome addition to the Wii library. The saving grace of this new Mario game is the possibility of a new Super mario RPG. If Super Mario RPG  is the new title, it might be time to dust off that Nintendo Wii all the kids are talking about
