Oz Sequel Somehow Seems Cooler With Todd McFarlane Producing

Wizard of Oz
Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that the big Wizard of Oz news that is spreading across the internet like wildfire is surrounding Dakota Fanning?  Well in case you missed it,  apparently Dakota Fanning is going to play Dorothy’s granddaughter in a sequel to the original 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.   I’m not totally sure why, but for some strange reason I find Dakota Fanning a little creepy.  I can’t exactly put my finger on it, maybe it’s just because she’s been in the movie spotlight since she was a kid (I find the Olsen twins a little creepy too), maybe it’s because she’s short, or maybe it’s just that she’s creepy, I’m not sure.  Regardless, the internet is abuzz with the news that Fanning is set to star in an Oz sequel.  For me it was sort of a non-issue, I love The Wizard of Oz, I’ll go see a new Oz movie, it might be ok, but it won’t measure up.  It will wind up being like the Star Wars prequels, they were exciting before you saw them, but they didn’t take you back to the same place the originals did.

Then I realized that Spawn creator Todd McFarlane was one of the movie’s producers.  Not that that alone will make an Oz sequel good, but it will make it worth following.  In an interview with the Daily Express McFarlane had this to say about the upcoming project.

You’ve still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she’s much closer to the Ripley character from ‘Alien’ [played by Sigourney Weaver] than a helpless singing girl

Hmmmm a Wizard of Oz sequel that features an Aliens inspired Dorothy Gale, that’s being produced by the guy who created Spawn…I’m sold, count me in. McFarlane has started working on a new Spawn script that, I’m going to bet is better than the last one, but hasn’t indicated that he will have any involvement with the scripting of the Oz project.
