Now as all of you out there should know that the Watchmen movie has just come out on DVD and Blu-ray, and if you haven’t purchased it yet WHAT’S THE HOLD UP? It’s been like a frick’n week. As you’ve undoubtedly noticed, there are a few different versions of the Blu-ray version out there but all it really comes down to is the packaging, the movie itself doesn’t change. But….if you’re a PS3 owner you have another choice that a Wii or a Xbox 360 owner doesn’t; the game The End is Nigh with the directors-cut of the film. The End is Nigh has been out for a few months now but this version includes the next chapter The End is Nigh 2 that currently can’t be found anywhere else. Now if you’ve already downloaded the first chapter of The End is Nigh, I might hold off on this investment because there’s no need for two versions of the same game, while if you haven’t downloaded it yet I say it’s time for a look on what The End is Nigh and The End is Nigh 2 offers.
Just like my other review on the game The Chronicles of Riddick for PS3 with dual games and their close proximity to how they play and look I will talk as if they are one entity.
If you have absolutely no idea what this game is about, let me fill you in. You and/or a partner choose from either Rorschach or Night Owl and set out on a quest that takes place well before the time the movie is set. I’m unhappy with the idea that the character design is based off of the movie but currently I’ll over look it for this. Without any real back story to the films and the comics one would find it a bit odd that the game would focus on the adventures of the past, and even more odd that it was only just Rorschach and Night Owl. There were other members of the group such as Silk Specter II, Dr. Manhattan, The Comedian and Ozymandias, sure they make an appearance in the game but why not be able to select them? I wouldn’t mind exploding some street thugs as Dr. Manhattan, or light someone on fire as The Comedian. Oh well, lets carry on.
The game tries desperately to make this as it it came straight off the pages of the graphic novel and onto your console, the problem is, it just doesn’t work, just like the moving comic version that came out for DVD and Blu-ray.

The game also suffers in the game play department. Sure it’s nice to see a beat-em up game, due to the fact they don’t make them much anymore, but make it interesting. Why only give me a very limited set of moves? this isn’t Double Dragon for the NES, give me some mixture, that would be very nice. I’m not expecting anything crazy like Devil May Cry because that would be just down right silly (but cool), I’m looking for something that would make playing these characters a hell of a lot more exciting.
Sure it didn’t hurt for the graphic novel to be turned into a full length feature film, but it really didn’t need a video game based off of the characters. Not only was the game unnecessary but to make a bad game around one of the most spectacular graphic novel of all time is really sad. I love the idea of seeing the come back of beat-em-up games, but if they end up like this I just may have to pull out a SNES just so I can go back to playing Captain Commando.
If you did purchase the first game I feel sorry for you. Avoid the double game and movie combo, just stick with the movie and save yourself some money on a game that’s actually fun.
3.5 out of 10
