The fact that Sony has intended to do a motion sensing controller ever since they got a gander at the wiimote is the second worst kept secret in Sony history; the first of course is the PSP Go! Regardless though Variety is reporting that this is the year that they make it official at E3. Now of course last year was supposed to be the year that they made it official that they were introducing motion sensing for the PS2, and were going to try and breathe life back into that console as a competitor for the wii in the battle for the casual gamer. So who really knows, these rumors have been pretty consistent since Sony filed for a motion sensing patent back in 2007.
Having said that, what Variety considers to be a pretty good source, had a chance to see a prototype that was all decked out with light emitting diodes and a camera to track movement. Since the camera can read different colors and intensities coming off the controller, the machine is able to do a much better job of tracking movement along the z-axis (back and forth) than Nintendo’s wiimote. Throw in the fact that the Nintendo hardware is beginning to show signs of it’s age and I think Sony is on the right track and the timing couldn’t be better.
Kombo.com reported that Sony was working with select developers to make sure that there was some software available to showcase what the new controller could do last month so this this rumor is looking more and more legit all the time. It’s funny that this news should come out this morning; last night I finished the single player campaign on Killzone 2, and was thinking to myself how great it would be if the wii had games that looked and played like this that could use their control scheme. It looks like I might get my wish sooner than I had imagined.
