star wars lunchbox The Empire Strikes Lunch: Rare R2 D2 Prototype Lunchbox Nets $1,036 US in Ebay AuctionHow can you keep your lunch cold and at the same time show off your timeless dedication to classic 70s sci-fi cinema? You could search for the elusive Close Encounters of Third Kind cooler, featuring Devil’s Tower spout; or you could scan ebay for another R2-D2 prototype lunchbox, which recently went for just over a grand in a recent Ebay auction. The lunchbox is a rare item; the soft-bodied lunchbox is topped off with a sturdy plastic dome, completing the R2-D2/garbage can look. The winning bid was $1,036 US, proving that even in the current economy, there is still a market for useless crap; or in the universe of Star Wars merch, ‘collector’s item’. I still can’t believe that this item never saw production. With all the Star Wars merch that has existed through the years, this should have populated the school lunchrooms of mid 80s, along with assorted lunchboxes from enduring franchises like the A-Team and CHIPS. Along those lines, what Star Wars kitchenware didn’t even reach prototype. Maybe a Han Solo in Carbonite ice tray; a Chewbacca floor mop; or even a Admiral Ackbar ‘It’s a trap!’ mouse trap. The possibilities are endless.

That’s so crazy that that lunch box sold for so much money! I’ve seen an R2D2 projection alarm clock; it seems the Star Wars franchise did not fully tap the potential in creating R2D2 products… there’s certainly a demand for it!
