Robert Kirkman and Todd McFarlane Bring Us Haunt #1

When I heard that Robert Kirkman and Todd McFarlane were teaming up to bring comic fans everywhere a new book to read I was ecstatic. Seriously how could the minds behind The Walking Dead and Spawn get together and deliver anything but solid wholesome comic goodness for readers everywhere. Then, after my first read through of Haunt #1 I realized that the book had a familiar feel. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but something was telling me that I had been here before. Then I realized it was the movie Ghost. You know the Ghost I’m talking about, Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopie Goldberg, yup that Ghost. But here’s the thing….It’s good (it hasn’t got Woopie Goldberg, so it’s not awesome though). Now that I think about it, it might remind me a bit of Spawn too. You’ll see….
I won’t tell you much more about Haunt #1 because a huge part of the book’s hook is that readers are going to spend the first issue trying to figure what the hell is going on and I don’t want to ruin it for you. But believe me when I say Haunt #1 will have you dying to get your hands on the next issue. At it’s heart Haunt is the story of two brothers who are at odds with one an-others professions. While we never find out the exact details of why Kurt and Daniel Kilgore are at odds readers are left with plenty of questions.
Now keep in mind that this is the first issue so the story telling is rock solid so far; but that’s par for the course when you’re dealing with the first arc of an origin story. Having said that though, Kirkman has yet to disappoint (although I’ve sort of been feeling that The Walking Dead is starting to walk in circles lately), and McFarlane has delivered pretty consistently in the storytelling department too over the years. So I’m not expecting a let down any time soon. The supernatural story is the star of this book, and since you’ll have more questions than answers once you close it chances are comic fans will be adding Haunt #2 to their November shopping lists. Like I said I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The story is well constructed, there’s a ton of violence, a bit of sex, and a supernatural twist that will capture your imagination.
Ryan Ottley’s pencils are pretty much what you would expect from him. It looks a great deal like his work on Invincible, and that’s not a knock. The visuals are solid if not spectacular and help keep the story moving which is exactly what you want. His style is the perfect compliment to Kirkman’s writing; just enough spectacle to keep you turning pages at a furious rate, but not so much that it overshadows the story.
So if you’re looking for something a little different to pick up this week, check out Haunt#1. It didn’t blow me away, but it certainly has the potential to do so over the next couple of months. So add it to your pull list. If I were Cool Terry I would give Haunt #1 7.5/10 severed penises. (You’ll get it when you read the book)

Didn’t anyone else feel that McFarlane’s inks didn’t jive well with Ottley’s pencils? I think maybe they will work well together one day depending on how long Ottley will be on this title. Or how long McFarlane’s ‘return to comics’ lasts.
Also, as far as costumes/powers go Haunt = Venom. No?

I didn’t have a problem with McFarlane’s inking. I like Ottley and didn’t really notice the inks one way or another. I don’t know if McFarlane’s “comeback” is going to last or not, I haven’t really checked out Spawn since he’s come back.
As far as the costume goes. Yeah there’s some pretty big similarities, I just figured since everybody on the internet seems to dwell on that I’d not get into it right now and look at the book itself. I agree with you though, I would have liked to have seen a little more than what we’ve been given so far.
