Well this is certainly a double shot of suckspresso to kick off the day. According to Robert Rodriguez himself the proposed remake of the sexy 60’s sci-fi flick is off. Rodriguez had the following to say to MTV with regards to how budget concerns and his desire to be with his family equated to a deadly mixture for the film’s future.
It came to the point where [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie… But I had to shoot it in Germany and post it in Germany. Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, ‘God, I don’t know if we can do that. I don’t know if I can be away that long.’
Rodriquez did say that fans who were looking forward to the film wouldn’t be left empty handed though as he hopes to find some way to release the pre-production art.
We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like. It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy-almost like that [1981 animated] movie, ‘Heavy Metal’-version of a ‘Star Wars’ movie. Something that no one ever could get to see. It was gonna be really great… People said, ‘Why are you doing ‘Barbarella?’ And I showed them the artwork and explained it. They would go, ‘Ooooh, okay!’
While looking for some additional details to supplement MTV’s coverage, I managed to turn up a report from a slightly less reliable source than MTV, Bloody Disgusting is claiming that Rodriguez’ script is getting an overhaul, and while his Troublemaker Studios will produce it that Rodriguez isn’t being considered as candidate for the movie’s director chair. Predators, which will be a sequel to the 80’s action flick Predator which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, will be about a group of commandos faced with the ominous task of subduing a vicious alien race. The movie has been fast tracked and will apparently be in theaters July 9th 2010. I’ll believe that when I see it.
