‘Cowboy Bebop’ Screenwriter Craig A Fan of the Series
Fans of the animated series Cowboy Bebop can rest easy with the knowledge that the movie adaptation of the series will be adapted by screenwriter Peter Craig, a true fan of the series, stating “I’ve probably watched every episode at least three or four times now – and I really adore what a complete world Watanabe and Nobumoto created” in a recent interview with website Anime Vice. The adaptation of the classic series took some heat after it was announced that Canuck actor Keanu Reeves would portray bounty hunter Spike Spiegel. Craig confirms the involvement of animation studio Sunrise, the production studio behind the series, recalling a meeting with show creator Shinchiro Watanabe and Keanu Reeves.: “I thought there was an immediate rapport between all of us, particularly Shinchiro Watanabe and Keanu”. Craig discusses the series with enthusiasm, assuring fans that the movie will contain all the elements that have come to define the series: “I loved how it mixed genres, how it blended noir, Jazz, Yakuza movies, Westerns, and so much else into a vision of the future that worked”.
I would check out the live-action adaptation of the movie regardless of expectations. I am still hesitant about the Keanu Reeves’ interpretation of lead character Spike, but it’s good to know that the movie is in the hands of a screenwriter that respects the source material. The next step is finding a director that will be able to bring the noir/sci-fi series to the big-screen. I’ll be following this one closely.
