star trek starfleet logo 01 New Star Trek Trailer Unleashed on the Big Screen
Watchmen wasn’t the only big release yesterday. We finally got to see a trailer with some more in-depth scenes from the new Star Trek movie on the big screen. I’m still not 100% sold on it, but I’m holding out hope.

I grew up watching Star Trek, cultivating the geek inside of me, feeding my love and interest of space, and I admit, when I heard there was going to be a ‘reboot’ of the Star Trek franchise a part of me was insulted. Trek canon is like scripture to us true geeks so my first thought was ‘oh great, they’re going to change everything, destroy the canon and make Star Trek watchable for the same people that like Smallville’.

But the more I watched the trailers and the more I thought about it, the more hope I had. I don’t know if it’s the need for more Star Trek, the trailer with it’s fancy CGI or my own naïveté, but my pessimism for this movie is slowly slipping. Let’s be honest though, part of Trek cannon is breaking Trek Canon.

Part of the canon that they kept was the cheesiness, although I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not (McCoy: “We’ve got no Captain and no First Officer to replace him” Kirk: “Yes we do”). Man, it’s too bad there isn’t a military ranking system to give Starfleet a chain of command so this isn’t a problem. Maybe Cadet Kirk should suggest that to Starfleet Command after he dramatically sits in the Captain’s chair and poses.

Like I said before, I’m not sold on it yet, but it is growing on me. I’ll give it a chance.

Watch the trailer and tell me what you think about it.
