spawn 001 Todd McFarlane Talks New Spawn MovieBack in 1997 when the first Spawn movie hit theaters comic fans everywhere were outraged at what was put before them across the nation’s movie screens.  I on the other hand thought it was pretty sweet.  Not perfect, not even one of my favorite comic flicks, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the book, and liked what I saw.  I realize that I may have just blown any semblance of credibility I may have had with the readers, but what can I say, I’ve always thought Spawn was a cool concept and at the time I thought that the special effects did it justice.

Now fast forward 12 years, zero sequels, and a shitty HBO cartoon later and it appears that the perfect storm for a reboot has moved in to port.  At last week’s Wolverine premiere in Tempe AZ IESB.net caught up with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane who had some huge news for the Spawn aficionados amongst us.

First up Canada’s second favorite comic icon (sorry Todd, Canada loves you but you’re no Wolverine) told the world that he has 5 offers to kick start the Spawn franchise on the silver screen.  McFarlane confirmed that he had offers ranging from big budget summer blockbusters to a small budget more indy type of movie.  He also hinted that he was leaning towards the smaller budget production as it would put him in the director’s chair and give him the creative control hw would need to make a movie he was happy with.

While on the red carpet, McFarlane also revealed that this reboot might not be a traditional superhero movie.  He described what he was thinking of as The Departed with something sinister in the shadows.  Call me nuts, but that sure sounds like the Sam and Twitch movie that was rumored a few years ago to me.  Again this might sound like sacreliege to the legions of McFarlane devotees, but it’s going to take all of Todd’s creative genius to keep me interested in a Spawn movie where Spawn isn’t a main character.  I’m glad that if this is the route he chooses to go that Todd will be the one behind the camera.

The other newsworthy morsel that was thrown our way was that the rights to the Spawn animated series revert back to McFarlane at the end of the year and that shortly there after we would have new Spawn cartoons that, due to advances in technology, would be spectacular.  The original cartoon never hit the mark for me, can’t quite figure it out, but I never really liked it all that much.  So to me this is better news than the impending movie.  But either way, as the old saying goes, the more Spawn the better.

McFarlane needs to learn from the mistakes of others. If they do reboot Spawn, they need to keep it dirty. Spawn isn’t Spiderman, Superman, or Batman. Keep the movie dark and the subject matter adult. Trying to turn Spawn into some kinda saturday morning cartoon character is the wrong move.

You must have missed the HBO cartoon raf.  It was dirty, more violent than the comic, no question about it.  It was in the spirit of the book for sure…it just sucked thats all

I don’t second that to the HBO cartoon. I feel in love with it, it was very very close to the comic. No topic was too taboo, and come on the voice of Keith David was a perfect choice. Sure the parts were long and really showed you how tortured Al Simmons was but how else could they have done it. But yet, that’s just me.

I enjoyed the HBO Animated series. It wasn’t top notch but it was what the movie should have been. All I’m saying is if they reboot the movie franchise, they should keep it adult rated. They shouldn’t be afraid to alienate non Spawn fans. Keep it close to the source, don’t cheese it up for people who have never read a Spawn comic so the studio can sell a few extra tickets at the box office.
